So I walk into an office I have never been to before. Was looking for an officer with a strange name that I couldn’t pronounce. So I get there, introduce myself and that I’d like to see X. Staffer explains that the person I am looking for is so senior, & goes ahead to explain the hierarchy of the organization, where he stands verses where X stands. OK, since it seems so hard to see X, he could help me, right? He agrees. I explain. Then he says he’s got to get permission from X. As he’s leaving, my colleague & I suggest that it would be better to see X and talk to him directly. He agrees and goes off to look for X.
Finally this man that I’ve never seen comes to the door squinting & sweeping his eyes over the room as he looks in from the doorway. From the demeanor of the rest I guess it’s X. I want to tell him to come in because we don’t bite. But before I start to speak, he sees me, recognition lights his face up and he’s advancing. He’s excited and exclaiming how long it has been since we last met. I am so puzzled at this point. He can’t be talking about me even though he’s coming directly at me. And he’s so excited he fails to notice that I am not returning the favor, simply because I thought it was a case of mistaken identity. I stick out my hand to shake his but he pulls me into a huge bear hug! Goes ahead to explain to the rest how we know each other, it’s been so long etc … and actually asks about several accurate details! What??? He knows me alright. And I quickly match his excitement, even though I am so embarrassed because I do not remember him. He says how, surely, no matter the location or path, human beings do meet as long as they are on planet earth! He even recalls that we last met in 2007/2008??. Which, when looking back was the last time I visited that organization, only it was at a different location. Wow! My only saving grace was that I was the only who knew that I knew nothing about him, and suffered embarrassment in silence. We went ahead and had a real long conversation while conducting business. Thankfully it was all work related and I, easily, was able take part in it
